The seed of an idea

It is an understatement to say that when it comes to new product development, an idea has to come from somewhere. Whether that may manifest itself as a spark of genius to create something entirely new, or a more subtle design change in how a product looks, feels or operates. In any case, it is a seed of an idea which will have to be rooted and nurtured in order for it to reach its full potential.

Out and about in my local woods the other weekend, when for once I wasn’t in the Sanstec workshop, I noticed an abundance of sycamore seeds, having turned brown with the autumnal season, falling from the trees and spinning down to the ground. It made me reflect that just like when a good idea comes along, a sycamore seed is also able to establish itself in the right conditions and just get on with growing.

Likewise with new product development, in order for a new idea to naturally develop into something more it too needs to land in the right spot, among the right people, and conditions. What the ideal environment may be will change from product to product and from time to time, but the concept really doesn’t change. As long as the end consumer is receptive to the latest thing or fad then the seed of an idea can keep on growing or branching out to new areas.
