Inheriting the design: where to next?

As a design engineer, each concept or design we are fortunate to work on is treated almost like a precious family heirloom. In that it is something we have inherited and needs to be cherished and kept in good order to pass onto the next generation.

When we are approached by a client, whether this may be a well-known brand or smaller seed or start up, there are a number of big questions to ask in determining where to go next with a design project.

Essentially our initial focus is to understand several things. Learning the history of the design is paramount. Such as understanding where the client has currently got to with a design. Followed by questioning whether they have discovered any issues with prototyping the product and if so, have they been resolved. This is usually followed by gaining clarity about whether the design needs further development. Finally, it is paramount to determine where and how a client wants to proceed next. Such as having discussions concerning which CAD software and version they are using, the budget and timetable for completion, for example.

Once we have gathered this information we can then look at the situation objectivity and begin to provide the appropriate design consultancy services, in line with adherence to specific industry standards. Our main aim is to provide the capability to help a client move on with the development cycle. This may mean helping with an issue and passing the design back to the client for them to develop further, or we may be contracted to work longer term and see it pass onto the manufacturing stage.

If you require a design partner who can provide services to design and develop products or parts, at any time during or for the entire product lifecycle, we, at Sanstec Design, would be honoured to inherit your design.
