Groundhog Day: A Day in the Life of an Engineer during Lockdown

I’m sure it is not just me, but every day is now feeling like groundhog day: a cycle of the same things over and over. Of course I consider myself extremely fortunate not to be in the front line, but I can say with sincerity that lockdown 3 is most definitely taking its toll.

My typical day, as a design engineer, involves a variety of activities constantly keeping me occupied such as paperwork, general administration, preparation of quotes, catching up on the latest CAD software releases and functional developments, engineering industry webinars and of course IT matters, strategy and marketing. There have been a lot of 'challenges' to address during this time but we are confident in feeling that we are making headway, despite the situation.

I have particularly missed the simple things which I previously took for granted, such as popping into my local coffee shop for my daily dose of caffeine and the 'important' and nice conversation exchange with the staff who work there. My own team now all work remotely with meetings and coffee socials all working well, when technology permits!

I have taken up cycling again – my poor bike is now struggling after having been stored away for so long. But now I use it as a preferred mode of travel to the Sanstec workshop. Not only is it helping improve my fitness, but aides my mental health as I slow down to appreciate what nature has to offer on the journey. At some stage I am going to have to give it a proper service before it, not me, gives up.
