Engineering The Future

You don’t have to look very far to read about the various technical advances in engineering. Whether it be in relation to the latest discovery or scientific breakthrough, new products and ideas are happening all the time and a lot of them sound like they have been lifted from the pages of a science fiction comic or sci-fi movie script. It certainly is an extremely exciting era to be involved in this industry. The future is indeed now.

Yes, there is a lot going on and it is mainly focused on providing us all with a more ‘efficient’ future. With the concept of green manufacturing and creating a circular economy, there is a lot of pressure on the manufacturing industry to generally improve their green credentials and hit the net zero carbon emission target set for 2050. To achieve this goal manufacturers are having to consider many things, such as creating a product that is more sustainable, from the materials selected and the amount needed, to the overall manufacturing process and subsequent energy used throughout. Innovations and improvements like these, are being discussed, debated and put into place across the production line.

To aid design engineers achieve the objectives set by their clients, CAD software is thankfully improving all the time, with new functionality to help us perform even more tasks and engineering analysis. The recent developments in 3D printing have meant that prototypes and parts can be produced faster, thus making savings in relation to both cost and time. Additionally the latest alternative materials for injection moulded components now include recycled, bio-based and more sustainable plastics.

Innovations in transport design are booming with green trains, planes and auto-mobiles being developed, powered by either battery, hydrogen or synthetic petrol. Who would have thought a few years back that we would have witnessed the introduction of green motor racing with the formation of Formula E. After all these years in the job, I still find being a mechanical design engineer exhilarating and always look forward with anticipation to the next awe-inspiring idea, breakthrough or product innovation that is simply going to blow my engineering socks off.
