AI is changing the landscape in which we all live and work. It is gradually making its way into our lives as people and businesses assess how it can make processes more efficient, in terms of time and money.

Artificial Intelligence, as the name sounds, is a strand of computer science where machines are programmed to think as humans do. For those of you who are familiar with the old science fiction movies of the 1970s, this concept sounds as if it has been lifted from one of these. But it hasn’t. This is our new reality.

AI has been around for a lot longer than we think, but it is now being implemented more widely in the workplace. This is, of course, transforming industries as they scope out how and where AI can be best situated.

In mechanical design engineering, like other creative industries, the human mind is still needed to carry out those tasks which cannot be automated. Should we be scared? I’m not sure yet, but one important fact to remember is that AI is most definitely not science fiction.
